DO YOU HAVE BACK PAIN? WHAT YOU SHOULD DO & DON’T!!!!!: SUNDAY MIRROR

Back pain is one of the most common pain syndromes we see everyday. Irrespective of age and sex we suffer from back pain. It’s very irritating and disabling. Back pain is a common reason for absence from work and for seeking medical treatment. It can be uncomfortable and debilitating. Sometimes it can be so severe that, surgical therapy might be necessary.

There are many causes of backpain. It can result from injury, activity and some medical conditions. Back pain can affect people of any age, for different reasons. As people get older, the chance of backpain increases. Besides it there are many causes of backpain, like osteoporosis, muscle strain, disc abnormality, arthritis etc. Bad posture and prolonged strain is another important cause.

If you have back pain, what should you do and what not to do. Because awareness of backpain is much needed to prevent it.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO!

Bring the right mattress to sleep. A firm mattress is best for back pain. Soft mattresses are not good.

Keep the bed in the right shape. Flip the mattress twice in a year.

Set your sitting seat properly. Adjust the height and position of your seat according to need and comfort.

Take breaks while working, hourly. Don’t work at a stretch. Get up and do some streching exercise. While driving take breaks.

While doing anything do maintain your posture. While lifting any object don’t curve your spine much. Instead use your hip and leg to lift. Keep your spine straight.

Use of commodes are far better than Indian type latrines.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO!

Don’t sleep on your stomach. Sleeping on stomach destroys the natural curvature of the spinal cord.

Don’t sit higher or lower to the level of screen. Working on systems put strain on muscles adjacent to spinal cord.

Avoid smoking. Smoking blocks small blood vessels in spinal cord which causes disc dessication.

Don’t stand for a long period in a single position. While standing for long periods keep one leg raised alternatively.

Don’t lift heavy objects by bending the spine.

And the most important thing is, if you are having chronic back pain, visit a neurologist and get it evaluated soon.
