Many times we have seen some children struggle hard to learn. They are intelligent, creative but face difficulty to read. That’s why they become slow learner. They can’t interpret written language. But unfortunately the parents and teachers think that they are inattentive, mischievous. Some think they have some psychiatric problem. In school their performance decreases. This leads to difficulty in adjustment. It’s not other than specific learning disorder. These children are different. Dyslexia is commonest cause of it.

WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?
In brief Dyslexia, also known as reading disorder, is characterized by trouble with reading despite normal intelligence. Different people are affected to different degrees. Problems may include difficulties in spelling words, reading quickly, writing. Often these difficulties are first noticed at school. For this the children are cornered even bullied by other students.

HOW COMMON IT IS?
Dyslexia is the most common learning disability. Individuals with this medical condition have difficulty in the areas of language processing. 1 in 5 people suffer from dyslexia. About 70 to 85% of children who are placed in special education for learning disabilities are dyslexic.Children have a 50% chance of having dyslexia if one parent has it. And a 100% chance if both parents have it.
SIGNS OF DYSLEXIA
Dyslexia does not reflect an overall defect in language, but a localized weakness within the phonologic module of the brain (where sounds of language are put together to form words or break words down into sounds). People with dyslexia are usually more creative and have a higher level of intelligence. Severity of clinical features varies.

CAUSES OF DYSLEXIA
Multiple causes are there for dyslexia. Most of them are idiopathic, where causes are not known. Several neurological causes and functional causes are there. After so many years of research still we don’t know causes of dyslexia.

Every child is not same. If a child is showing signs of dyslexia he or she should be evaluated for learning disorders. School teachers should be extra sensitive to this as these are very common condition. These children need special treatment and education. Many great scientists were dyslexic in their childhood. Who knows your child may be great some day.
