SUNDAY MIRROR: DIABETES, THE SILENT KILLER OF THE NEURONS OF YOUR EYE…..

Vision is one of the most important asset of human being. Vision is a very complex process. Every parts of our eye, optic nerve, visual cortex of brain, play important role.

The retina is one of the most important part of eye which helps us to see. Several specialized nerve cells make layers to help in the vision.

What if something destroys our retina!!! Our world will be dark. It will be a biggest loss. And diabetes is one of the worst enemy of retina. Gradually and slowly it destroys retina. In medical term we tell it ‘diabetic retinopathy’. It’s seen in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy is a world wide disease. It has huge burden. The burden of diabetes is more than 400 million. More than one third have diabetic retinopathy. It’s expected to cross 200 million in next 10 years.

Broadly it’s divided into two types. One is proliferative means abnormal blood vessels grow inside retina. Other one is non proliferative. In it abnormal bleeding occurs inside retina.

From the primary stage it doesn’t show any symptoms. But as disease progress symptoms increase. Blurring of vision, floaters, poor night vision. Gradually partial or total vision loss…………..

Vision of a retinopathy patient, blurred with floaters….

Duration of diabetes is primary risk factor. More the duration, more chance of retinopathy. But in Type 2 diabetes, sometimes we are diagnosed after years of disease onset. So many patients suffer from retinopathy even at the time of disease diagnosis. Increase blood sugar, blood pressure are other risk factors.

But you know, a single eye examination can detect diabetic retinopathy even before vision loss. Your eye specialist can detect it very easily.

So if someone is having diabetes or in prediabetic stage, even if your blood glucose is not so high, do visit opthalmologist and do eye examination regularly. Every day I see many people claim, to be cured from Diabetes by taking products shown in TV, newspaper etc. Don’t believe blindly.

So even if you think diabetes is cured, go to opthalmologist, for regular eye check up. Because nothing matters if vision is gone. Only prevention and precaution can save your precious vision. Once retinopathy is severe, it’s very difficult to protect the vision. Save the eyes before it becomes complete dark…..!!!!!!

How to prevent the retinopathy in Diabetes is topic of another SUNDAY MIRROR….
